Investing in palladium coins, bullion, stocks, or exchange traded funds related to palladium can provide a balance to any precious metals investor's portfolio.  Each form of investing, either coins/bullion, miners or bullion backed equities, has advantages and disadvantages.  Palladium is usually mined along with other Platinum Group Metals (PGMs) or as a byproduct of nickel-copper mining.  While miners processing palladium can leverage your palladium investment, they face people (strikes/accidents), government, market, and weather related pitfalls.  Physical ownership of the metal entails storage costs, security concerns, and the age old fact that holding the metal provides no interest or dividend payments.

The majority of economical platinum mining is done in South Africa, the Russian Federation, and Canada.  Limited platinum/palladium mining is done in the USA. Russian stockpiles of palladium have been seen in the past as a drag on upside price. Reports in August 2009 (Mining Weekly) stated most of these reserves had been depleted.  Palladium is also the metal of choice for gasoline engine catalytic converters vs. platinum for diesel engine converters.

Palladium hardness is greater than gold, silver, and platinum. Palladium is not as dense as Platinum and has been estimated to be 3 times as abundant as platinum in the earths curst. While platinum is substantially higher then palladium (February 2010) there have been times in which palladium has be valued higher than platinum.
